Working with Moon Phases
Across many cultures and time periods, the moon has served as a powerful symbol of natural rhythm, transformation, and continuity. Its steady transition through visible phases has long provided a way for people to track time, observe seasonal changes, and connect with the cycles of the Earth. While modern life no longer relies on the lunar calendar for agriculture or scheduling, many individuals still look to the moon as a guide for mindful living, spiritual practice, and intentional growth.
The lunar cycle spans roughly 29.5 days and moves through several distinct phases. Each phase is often associated with specific themes, making the moon a natural framework for personal reflection, ritual work, and goal-setting.
Understanding Lunar Work
“Working with the moon” refers to aligning intentions, actions, or spiritual practices with the energy traditionally associated with each lunar phase. Many people use the moon as a symbolic roadmap: setting intentions when the moon is new, taking action as it waxes, celebrating progress during the full moon, and releasing old energy as it wanes. This approach offers structure, encourages mindfulness, and fosters a sense of connection to natural cycles.
A simple structure for lunar work includes:
🌑 New Moon: Set intentions and identify goals for the cycle.
🌓 Waxing Phases: Take consistent action to build momentum and manifest intentions.
🌕 Full Moon: Celebrate progress, amplify positive energy, and charge spiritual tools.
🌗 Waning Phases: Release habits, thoughts, or situations that no longer serve a purpose.
The lunar cycle becomes a symbolic roadmap, with each phase offering a point of reflection and an opportunity for purposeful action.
Lunar Phases
Why Working with the Moon Can Be Helpful
-
Natural rhythm & structure: The lunar cycle gives you a built-in timeline for intention, action, growth, and release — a renewable rhythm that can keep you aligned and grounded.
-
Mindfulness & reflection: Observing the moon phases offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and check in — which can help reduce stress, build self-awareness, and support mental well-being.
-
Intentional living: By aligning your actions and intentions to a natural cycle, you’re more likely to be thoughtful, goal-oriented, and aware of growth over time — rather than being reactive or chaotic in everyday life.
-
Flexibility & symbolism: You don’t have to follow rigid rules. Use the phases symbolically — tailor rituals to what resonates for you personally. What matters most is the intention behind your actions.
Moon Signs & Astrological Correspondences
As the moon moves through the zodiac—changing signs approximately every 2.5 days—its energetic influence shifts. Some practitioners incorporate lunar astrology into their work to deepen insight or tailor rituals to the moon’s current sign.

Enhancing Your Lunar Practice

Moon Journaling
Keeping a dedicated moon journal encourages reflection and helps track progress throughout each phase. Whether using a simple notebook or a structured printable, journaling strengthens awareness and intention.
Crystals & Lunar Energy
Crystals can be incorporated to support lunar work.
-
New Moon: Black moonstone, clear quartz, and crystals aligned with specific intentions.
-
Full Moon: Rainbow moonstone, selenite, and stones associated with illumination and clarity.
Herbal Moon Magic
Herbal practices can be paired with lunar work through teas, incense, oils, or sachets. Common moon-aligned herbs include:
-
Mugwort: Intuition, dreams, divination
-
Lavender: Calming, releasing, emotional clarity
-
Chamomile: Rest, balancing full-moon intensity
-
Peppermint: Awakening, heightened awareness
-
Calendula: Motivation and bold action during fire-sign moons
Many practitioners enjoy selecting herbs based on intention or the moon’s current zodiac sign.
Moon Water
Moon water is water that has been intentionally charged under the light of the moon to capture the energetic qualities of a specific lunar phase. It is traditionally created by placing clean, drinkable water in a glass jar or bowl, often sealed or covered, and leaving it outdoors or on a windowsill where it can receive direct moonlight.
Many practitioners add crystals, herbs, or written intentions around the container rather than inside it to keep the water safe and clean. Once charged, moon water can be used for cleansing tools, anointing candles, watering plants, adding to ritual baths, making sprays, or incorporating into spellwork aligned with the moon’s energy. Each phase offers a different influence: New Moon water supports new beginnings, Full Moon water enhances manifestation and intuition, and Waning Moon water assists with release and purification.
We include moon water from various full moons in our Witch Confetti and Crow Confetti, both available in our shop.
